Who are we?

Reading Islamic Trustees for the Environment (RITE) is a community group whose vision it is to bring a wider appreciation of our environment (Allah's creation).  We are based in Reading, UK and launched in June 2009 to coincide with World Environment Day.

Why Trustees?

Allah (subhana Ta'ala) has entrusted the earth to us, and we should look after it.  Using the word of trustee shows that we take this responsibility seriously.

Why RITE?

A rite is an established, ceremonious, usually religious act and we believe that looking after the environment is a rite to living an Islamic life as in the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) .

Why the Muslim Community?

Muslims are instructed to be responsible and considerate citizens in our families and communities, practising concern and moderation in our lives. We can do this best by following the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah, which clearly invites us to live in harmony, not only with our neighbours, but also with our environment.

We are aiming our work predominantly towards people of the Muslim faith because we are using Islamic principles to guide our group but we would welcome participation from those with any or no faith.

Why Reading?

The co-founders both live in Reading, UK therefore decided to build the group from this base.  You certainly don't have to be a member to receive the newsletter but events will usually be held locally.  We also have a  facebook page which you are welcome to join.

What do we do?

We are a group that works with mosques and community organisations to raise awareness of environmental issues and assists them in running events or activities with their members and networks.

How often do you meet?

As a group we are still in the early stages of development, we do not have any formal meetings and are concentrating on the awareness campaign in parallel with setting up the groups' structure.  If you would like to join the management committee and take on intiaitves to work on and champion then please get in touch.
